Programs

McKinney received the designation of being a STEM Transformation School in the spring of 2016. This designation provided additional support to expand the STEM learning in our school. What does STEM learning look like at McKinney? All of our classrooms use the Project Lead the Way curriculum to investigate and solve real world problems. We offer after school programs like our Science Club and the What If? Club. During the summer students can continue their using technology as well as engineering design projects. Students participate in the Invention Convention in the spring. Students use iPad in music to create and record music. Our PE teachers uses and creates exercise videos with students. Our school STEM logo was designed and chosen by our students. This is just the beginning of our transformation to being a STEM school. McKinney is so proud to be an official STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) school!  In fact, we are the only Title I STEM school in Hillsboro School District, and we are working hard to make sure that each one of our students is prepared for a career in an increasingly technology-based future.  Our goals as a STEM school are to foster a growth mindset where making mistakes is a crucial part of learning, get students to access opportunities to use technology on a regular basis, and provide real-world problems for students to solve.  We are always looking for volunteers to come and discuss how they use STEM every day, so please contact us if you would be willing to do that.

We hope that you are able to talk to your child about using STEM at school.  Ask them about Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and how they are using the engineering and design process to solve complex problems.  Check with them about how they use their math and science in new and creative ways.  As a school, we are trying to integrate Science and Math into our reading and writing so that our students get as much STEM exposure as possible.  Thank you for your help as we develop our students into our world's future STEM leaders!
